Define loudness. ii) What are the units of loudness? iii) At what frequency is zero units on the loudness scale designed to coincide with an SPL of OdB? b) Measurements on sounds at 100 Hz and 1 kHz show that they have the same sound pressure level (SPL) but only the 1 kHz sound is audible. Explain how this can be so. You should include an appropriate, sketched graph to illustrate your answer. c) Describe, with the aid of a diagram, the working of a sound level meter that takes into account the response of the human ear.

Explanation / Answer

b)   Humans can generally sense sounds at frequencies between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second, or hertz (Hz)—although this range shrinks as a person ages. But establishing the effect of sounds with frequencies under about 250 Hz has been harder. Even though they’re above the lower limit of 20 Hz, these low-frequency sounds tend to be either inaudible or barely audible .

A 100 Hz tone would require an amplitude of about 40 dB SPL to be detectable 75 % of the time by same young adults - this means they are much more sensitive to 1000 Hz tones than to 100 Hz tones .
