Question

The figure shows a meter stick suspended from its center and 4 separate forces acting on it. All the forces have the same magnitude and are perpendicular to the meter stick. In what direction, if at all, will the meter stick spin as a result of the action of these forces.

1). The meter stick will spin clockwise

2) The meter stick will spin counter-clockwise

3) The meter stick will not spin

4) The meter stick will spin either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction depending on the magnitude of the forces.

Suspension point 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90

Explanation / Answer

Let the magnitude of each force be F.
Taking the moment along the suspension point,
Clockwise is +ve
Anti clockwise is -ve

= - F *30 + F * 20 + F * 20 - F * 30
= - 20*F

As the Net Moment is -ve, The stick will move in  Anti clockwise Direction !!

Correct option :- 2) The meter stick will spin counter-clockwise.
