Question

Complete each problem in a logical manner, showing all work (ADIC), and using diagrams wherever possible (FBDs where required). Be sure to highlight answers. State all numerical results to 3.00 or 4.000 significant figures and in mks units unless otherwise noted. [Similar to P2-4, but much easier; 40 points] A small spherical rock (m = 20 g) from a slingshot is fired horizontally with a speed for 78.0 m/s Still moving horizontally, it passes through a bottle of water with a square cross-section that is 9.00 cm along each side. When it exits the bottle of water it is moving (still horizontally) at 19.0 m/s. (Assume the acceleration is constant.) Determine the acceleration of the rock while passing through the bottle of water. Determine the force on the rock while passing through the bottle of water. Describe how N1 and N3 apply to the situation described in this problem.

Explanation / Answer

A) Average speed = (78+19)/2 = 48.5 m/s

time taken = 0.09/48.5 = 0.001856 s

a=(19-78) /0.001856 =31800 m/s^2

B) F=ma = 0. 020 ×31800 = 636 N

c) Newton first law applies as- rock continues to move with constant speed unless acted upon by the water

Newton third law applies as whatever force the rock exerts on water, an equal and opposite force applied by water on rock.
