Question

Complete each problem in a topical manner, showing all work (ADIC). and using diagrams wherever possible (FBDs where required). Be sure to highlight answers. State all numerical results to 3.00 or 4.000 significant figures and in mks units unless otherwise note. A 79 kg skier starts from rest (without pushing off) at the top of a hill covered with frictionless snow. (The height of the top of the hill is exactly 59 m above a horizontal surface at the base of the hill. The horizontal surface is also covered with frictionless snow.) The skier moves along the horizontal surface the skier picks up a 43 kg dog (that was originally at rest snow) and then continues moving horizontally while carrying the dog. A) Determine the speed of the skier at the bottom of the hill before picking up the dog. B) Determine the speed of the skier and the cat after the skier picks up the dog.

Explanation / Answer

A). For speed of skier at bottom, energy conservation, loss in potential energy is equal to gain in kinetic energy.

mgh = 1/2 mv^2

Hence speed at bottom is 34.023 m/sec

B). As no external force on skier plus dog system in horizontal direction hence momentum of the system will be conserved in horizontal direction.

Hence speed after receiving dog will be m1v1/(m1+m2)

Hence speed will be 22.0314 m/sec.
