Question

Water is in the big beaker in the figure on the left. Scale 1 reads 75 newtons, scale 2 reads 617 newtons, and scale 3 reads 0 newtons. The hanging block has a density of 10 × 10^3 kg/m^3.

a. To the nearest tenth of a newton what does scale 1 read after the block is fully lowered into the beaker of water?

b. To the nearest tenth of a newton what is the new reading on scale 2?

c. The experiment is repeated with the valve opened. What is the new reading on scale 3?

d. After the experiment is repeated with the valve opened what is the new reading on scale 2?

Valve (closed)

Explanation / Answer

When When Valve is closed. all readin will remain same.

When valve is opened:

Mass of the block = 75/9.81 Kg

Volume of the block V= m/ rho =75/9.81* 10 × 10^3 =7.645*10^-4 m^3

Now, scale three will have water of mass = rhowater*V = 1000*7.645*10^-4 =0.7645 Kg

Weight of this water= scale 3 reading = 0.7645*9.81 =7.5 N

Scale 2 reading = 617-7.5 =609.5 N

Scale 1 reading will remain same = 75 N

(a) 75 N

(b) 617 N

(c) 7.5 N

(d) 609.5 N ..610 N
