Question
Water is known for being the universal solvent because it can dissolve a variety of solutes. Not only that, water can also help to transport nutrients, waste, regulate body temperatures, and cause chemical reactions in the body. Because or body is made up of about 50% to 70% of water, it is important to maintain the fluid balance in our bodies. My question is what would happen if the body had an insufficient amount of fluids in the body? How would the body react? Would the body prioritize certain functions over others? Would the body try to retain as much water in the body to allow these functions to operate or just shut down completely? What are some other ways the body is able to obtain fluids, not just be drinking water.
Explanation / Answer
Insufficient amount of fluid in body causes thirst, reduced sweating, decreased urine production, dry mouth, dizziness, and reduced skin elasticity. if it's continuing, the cells in the body will begin to shrivel and malfunction, and tissues in the body will begin to dry out. Because brain cells are among the most vulnerable to dehydration, confusion and even coma can occur.
the body's electrolytes gradually is going to deficient, and water is unable to move as easily from inside the cells out into the blood. The amount of water in the bloodstream will be further decreased and blood pressure can drop, causing lightheadedness or the feeling of starting to faint, particularly when standing up suddenly. If water and electrolyte losses continue, blood pressure can fall dangerously low and result in shock and severe damage to kidneys, liver, and brain.
When there’s not enough water or dehydration occured, the hypothalamus gland, which controls fluid balance, gets activated at first.
Insufficient levels of water in the blood causes blood pressure to drop and heart rate to spike. As dehydration sets in, cells throughout the body have to work harder in order to carry out basic functions. That causes strain, which can manifest in any number of ways.
the other options beside drinking water are sports drinks, oral dehydration salts, skimmed milk, food with electolytes
