Question

For each of the following units, indicate if that unit can be used to measure the "Electric Field" or "Electric Potential" unit used to measure V/m J/C N/C V 2) External work is needed to move a negative test charge between which of the following potentials? (units intentionally left off here) a) from 1.0 to 2.0 b) from 1.0 to 1.0 c) from 2.0 to 1.0 d) from 2.0 to 2.0 3) Calculate the potential difference as you move through a displacement of Delta r=0.2i-0.5j+0k in a region of space with E=3 N/C along the negative y axis, (show your work including units) 4) Calculate the potential at a distance of 0.04 m from a point charge of -3.5 E-6 C (show your work including units)

Explanation / Answer

1)

The SI unit of electric field strength is newtons per coulomb (N/C) orvolts per meter (V/m).

An electric potential (also called the electric field potential or the electrostatic potential) is the amount of electric potential energythat a unitary point electric charge would have if located at any point in space, and is equal to the work done by an electric field in carrying a unit of positive charge from infinity to that point.

According to theoretical electromagnetics, electric potential is a scalar quantity denoted by V, equal to the electric potential energy of any charged particle at any location (measured in joules) divided by the charge of that particle (measured in coulombs). By dividing out the charge on the particle a remainder is obtained that is a property of the electric field itself.

This value can be calculated in either a static (time-invariant) or a dynamic (varying with time) electric field at a specific time in units of joules per coulomb (J C1), or volts (V)

2)

Answer :a)

The charge has to be moved from lower potential to the higher potential

3)

We know that

E =DeltaV/Deltar

Then DeltaV =-E.Deltar = -(3N/C)(0.2i-0.5i+ok) =0.6i-1.5j+ok

d)

The electric potential at a distance is given by

V =(1/4pieo)(q/r) =9*109*(3.5*10-6)/0.04m =787.5*103V =7.87*105V
