Question
Asked for clarification on a problem. Got a repeat, more or less, of the original answer which is very confusing. Please see previous question and try to explain how a large rotating disk should be placed (oriented) in the belly of a ship to resist pitch and roll, but not resist steering (yaw). Chegg answer references 30 deg. Orientation but does not explain why. Orientation but does not explain why.Explanation / Answer
A large rotating disk should be placed (oriented) in the belly of a ship to resist pitch and roll, but not resist steering (yaw) because the pitch axis is an imaginary line running horizontally across the ship and through the centre of gravity and the roll axis is an imaginary line running horizontally through the length of the ship through its centre of gravity & parallel to the waterline.
But, the yaw axis is an imaginary line running vertically through the ship and through its centre of gravity. A yaw motion is a side-to side movement of the bow and stern of the ship.
