Question
Monica is hurrying off to her physics class, jogging down the sidewalk at a speed of 3.65 m/s . Her friend Manny suddenly realizes that she left in such a hurry that she forgot her lunch of bagels, so he runs to the window of their apartment, which is a height 36.8 m above the street level and directly above the sidewalk, to throw them to her. Manny throws them horizontally at a time 6.00 s after Monica has passed below the window, and she catches them on the run. You can ignore air resistance.
A)With what initial speed must Manny throw the bagels so Monica can catch them just before they hit the ground?
B)Where is Henrietta when she catches the bagels?
Explanation / Answer
a)
given
h = 36.8 m/s
speed of Monica = 3.65 m/s
let t is the time taken for the bagels to fall down.
Apply, -h = voy*t - 0.5*g*t^2
h = 0.5*g*t^2
==> t = sqrt(2*h/g)
= sqrt(2*36.8/9.8)
= 2.74 s
horizontal distance tavelled by monica, x = (6 + 2.74)*3.65
= 31.9 m
so, Initial speed of the bagels must be = 31.9/2.74
= 11.64 m/s <<<<<<<----------Answer
B) at 31.9 m from bas of the builiding.
