Question
A positive charge, Q = 35 C is placed on the x-axis at x = -1.8 cm. A positive charge which is twice as large is brought from infinity to a point x = +1.8 cm on the x-axis. The mass of each charge is 0.3 g.
Part A
How much energy does it take to assemble these two charges? (in J)
Part B
If you release the two charges simultaneously, what would be the speed of the 35 C charge at infinity? (in m/s)
Part C
If you release the two charges simultaneously, what would be the speed of the 2*(35) C charge at infinity? (in m/s)
Thanks in advance for any help!!!
Explanation / Answer
a) work done = negative change in potential energy
w = u1-u2
at infinity energy = 0
u = 9*10^9*35*2*35*10^-12/0.036 = 612.5 J
b) potential energy = kinetic energy
1/2mv^2 = 612.5
v = sqrt(2*612.5/0.3*10^-3) = 2020.7 m/sec
c) POTENTIAL = W/Q = 612.5/2*35*10^-6 = 8.75*10^6 V
1/2mv^2 = q*V
AGAIN WE CAN SAME SPEED = 2020.7 m/sec
