Question

Assignment for Chapters 5 & 6 Name Whenever a genome sequence is completed, there are a significant number, 30-50%, of genes that have no known function. Some of these genes are found to be conserved across species and have been classified into families and superfamilies, with no function being assigned to any of the family members Why do we sill nof now the finction of these genes? Discus what types of functions might be found in this unclassified group of genes, would you expect the genes to simply be unidentified members of existing pathways or would you expect these to be unique pathways. What is the possibility that these genes are no longer needed?

Explanation / Answer

We still don't know the function of some genes because we still are unable to isolate that which protein is being coded by that particular gene.

The function of those unclassified genes may be important in case of some disease whose causative factors and pathogenesis is still unknown to the medicine

It may be important that these genes might be coding some unidentidied protein that are responsible for auto immune disorders in our body

These genes might be encoding some proteins involve in normal physiological function of body which is still not been completely elaborated by medicine

These genes might be coding some proteins which are needed by our ancestors and not by us hence by the time due to evolution the function of these gets suppressed

There is high possibility that these genes are not needed by us because by today we have our whole DNA sequence with us and function of each and every important segment is assigned now.any further evaluation is considered of no clinical significance by experts.
