Question
Your boss tells you to load a VERY heavy box onto a truck. You and three of your friends try to lift it, but it doesn't budge. Remembering from physics class how pulleys can help in this situation, you rig up the following system (shown on right). Assume the pulleys are massless and frictionless. a. If the mass of the box is 1900 kg, what are the tensions Ti through Ts and force F needed to hold the box in place? b. What are the tensions Ti through T5 and force F needed to lift the box with an acceleration of 0.13 m/s2?Explanation / Answer
a) F = T5
and T2 = T3 = T5 = F
T1 = T2 + T3 = 2F
and T1 = mg =1900x 9.8 = 18620 N
T1 = 18620 N
F = T2 = T3 = T5 = 18620/2 = 9310 N
T4 = T2 + T3 + T5 = 27930 N
b) T1 - mg = ma
T1 = m(g+a) = 1900 ( 9.8 + 0.13) = 18867 N
F = T2 = T3 = T5 = 9433.5 N
T4 = 28300.5 N
