Question

You have been asked by your local school district to review the plans for purchasing a new school bus. A major concern is the safety of the kids. Knowing that kids on a bus rarely wear seatbelts, you decide to conduct a test to determine the coeffiecent of static friction between the bus seats and blue jeans. So you wrap a 2 kg brick in a piece of denim fabic and place it on a seat. After several test stops from a speed of 30mph (44ft/s), you determine that the minimum stopping distance the bus can have without the brick sliding is 50 ft.

Explanation / Answer

here

acceletation a = v^2/2s

a = 44* 44/(2* 50)

a = 19.36 ft/s^2

but a = ut

so coefficient of static fricttion = u = a/g

u = 19.36/32

u = 0.605 is the coefficient of static friction
