Question
Two horizontal parallel wires are separated by 5 cm; a view from above of the set-up is shown in the figure at right. The upper wire in the figure carries a current I from right to left, while the other wire carries the same amount of current in the opposite direction. A lightweight slider rests on top of the two wires. The entire apparatus is embedded in a uniform magnetic field which directed upward (out of the page in the figure).
a) The slider is electrically conducting so that current flows through it from the upper wire in the figure to the lower; in which direction is the magnetic force on the slider?
b) If the mass of the slider is 2 grams, the current I is 6 A, what is the magnetic field strength if the slider accelerates at 5 gees (that is, 5 × 9.8 m s?2 )?
Explanation / Answer
here,
a)
force , F = I * L X B
as magnetic feild is upwards,
using right hand rule,
the direction of force is towards left
b)
L = 0.05 m
I = 6 A
mass , m = 0.002 kg
accelration , a = 5 * g
let the magnetic feild be B
F = I * L * B * sin(90) = 0.002 * 5 * g
0.05 * 6 * B = 0.002 * 5 * 9.8
B = 0.33 T
the magnetic feild strength is 0.33 T
