Question

Are worth a total of 95 points. Show your work clearly to justify your answers for partial to full credit. You get credit for doing something right. You lose credit for not explaining answers. Don't forget the units. If 6.0 times 10^21 electron pass through a 20 ohm resistor in 10 min, what is the potential difference across the resistor? (e= 1.6 times 10^-19 C) A battery, manufactured to have an emf of 25.0 V, but the terminal voltage is o9nly 22 V when the battery is across a 6.0 ohm resistor. What is the internal resistance of the battery?

Explanation / Answer

1. Current = charge/time = 6.0*10^21 * 1.6*10^-19 / 10*60 = 1.6 A
V = IR = 1.6*20 = 32 V
2. Internal resistance of battery = r
25 = i(r+6)
and 25 - ir = 22, so ir = 3
25 = 3 + 6i
i = 3.66A
r = 0.819 ohm
