Question

What is being solved for:

1) After the blocks are released from rest, find the speed of each block after moving 2.40 cm.

and

2) After the blocks are released from rest, find the tension in the cord.

Exercise 5.37 Submit My Answers Give Up As shown in the figure(Figure 1), block A (mass 2.30 kg ) rests on a tabletop. It is connected by a horizontal cord passing over a light, frictionless pulley to a hanging block B (mass 1.66 kg ). The coefficient of kinetic friction between block A and the tabletop is 0.320 Correct Part C After the blocks are released from rest, find the speed of each block after moving 2.40 cm u= m/s Figure 1 of 1 Submit My Answers Give Up Part D After the blocks are released from rest, find the tension in the cord Submit My Answers Give Up

Explanation / Answer

On block A:

in vertical, N - mA g = 0

N = mA g

friction force = uk N = uk mA g = 0.320 x 2.30 g = 0.736g

in horizontal,

T - f = mA a

T - 0.736g = 2.30a .......(i)

on block B :

mB g - T = mB a

1.66g - T   = 1.66a ........(ii)

adding (i) and (ii),

1.66g - 0.736g = (2.30 + 1.66)a

a = 2.29 m/s^2

using vf^2 - vi^2 = 2ad

vf^2 - 0^2 = 2 ( 2.29)(0.024 m )

vf =0.105 m/s

D) 1.66g - T = 1.66a

T = 1.66 ( 9.8 - 2.29) = 12.47 N
