Question

A rectangular coil with a length of 8.0 cm and a width of 4.0 cm and 250 turns is placed in a uniform magnetic field with a magnitude of 0.75 T (a) If the maximum torque experienced by the coil is 0.24 N·m, determine the current in the coil What physical quantities determine the torque on a current-carrying loop in a magnetic field? For what orientation of the loop will the torque have the maximum value? mA (b) When the magnetic field makes an angle of 35o with the normal to the plane of the coil, determine the magnitude of the torque acting on the coil N m N·m

Explanation / Answer

a) Torque is given as T=NIBA sin theta

For maximum torque, Tmax=NIAB sin theta = 250*I*32e-4*0.75*sin 90= 0.6I

0.24=0.6 I

I=0.24/0.6= 0.4 A

b) torque,T= 250*0.4*32e-4*0.75 sin 35 = 0.138 N-m
