Question
Two small, identical spherical conductors carry charges of 7.5 C and 0.8 C. They are separated by a distance of 132.0 cm. Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic force between these two spheres.
Correct, computer gets: 3.10E-02 N
Hint: This is Coulomb's Law. F = k*q1*q2/(r^2). Remember that the charge q is expressed in Coulombs and the separation r in metres.

Is the force between the spheres in the above problem attractive or repulsive? (Enter A for attractive or R for repulsive -- 1 attempt ONLY)
------------The spheres described in the previous problem are brought into contact and then returned to their original separation. Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic force between these two spheres.
PLEASE SHOW ALL WORK PLEASE!!!
Explanation / Answer
a) F = k*q1*q2/(r^2) = 3.1*10^-2 N
b) As charges are of same nature, so the force will be repulsive.
c) When the spheres are brought into contact and then returned to their original separation, then charges will be equally distributed to both spheres i.e. q1 = q2 = (7.5+0.8)/2 = 4.15 uC
F = (9*10^9*4.15*4.15*10^-12)/1.32^2 = 8.9*10^-2 N
