Question
y1 Y0 A ball is thrown into the air from ground level. After a time t-1 s, the ball has traveled to a position x1·26 m to the right of and yy-10 m up from where it was thrown (at this time, the x and y components of the ball's velocity are still positive). The axes show the x and y directions to be considered positive. 1) What was the x component of the initial velocity of the ball? s Submit Help 2) hat was the y component of the initial velocity of the ball? voy m/s Submit Help 3) What was the initial speed of the throw? Vo" m/s Submit HeipExplanation / Answer
Given
ball is thrown with initial velcity u, at time t = 1 s it is at (x,y) = (26,10 )m
from equations of motion s = ut +1/2 at^2 here along x axis or horizontal as teh air resistance is zero and a = 0 m/s2
a)
s = ut ==> u_x = s/t = 26/1 = 26 m/s
b) y component of u is
s = ut + 1/2 at^2 ==> u_y = s/t - 1/2 gt = 10/1 - 0.5*9.8*1 = 10-4.95=5.05 m/s
c) speed is magnitude of velocity speed = sqrt((26)^2+(5.05)^2) = 26.49m/s
d) angle is tan theta = u_y/u_x == > theta = arc tan (5.05/26)= 10.99 degrees
e) heightof the ball at top of its path is from the equatio v^2 -u^2 = 2as
v = 0 at maximum height, s = - u^2/2g = - 26^2/2*(-9.8) = 34.49 m
