Explanation / Answer

Answer a:

Fromthe pedigree chart, we can safely say that it is an autosomal recessive trait since the trait of deafness being transferred are not found in all the generations (I,II,III,IV,V).

(a).In the 1st generation, both the parents are unaffected, while one of the offspring in 2nd generation i.e., II-1 is deaf. This is because the trait is autosomal recessive.

(b).In the 3rd generation, III-2 is affected, this is due to the recessive trait from 2nd generation, II-2 being the carrier of the mutant allele. The case of III-3 is the same as stated in [point (a)].

(c). Since both III-2 and III-3 are affected with recessive traits, their offsprings in the 4th generation are all affected

Answer b:

Whileboth IV-5 and IV-6 are both affected, their offsprings in the 5th generation are all unaffected. This is because the recessive trait of single gene cannot persists.
