Question

then calculate Power (W) assuming 1 m away

then calculate Intensity of 100,000 fans 100 m away

answer should be in decibles --- please write out explicit steps so i can know how to do this myself

3. Suppose there are 110,000 football fans in Beaver Stadium (there have been more!), and their average distance to the players on the field is 100 m. If they all are yelling at a given time, at 90 db each, how loud is the sound heard by the players? Does it make it impossible for the players to hear the signals being called?

Explanation / Answer

intensity level B = 10 dB log(I/Io)

Io is constant = 10^-12 W/m^2

so

log(I/Io) = 90/10 = 9

I/Io = 10^9

I = 10^9 * 10^-12

I = 1*10^-3 W/m^2

--------------------------

Now Intensity I = power/area

Power P = IA

P = 1e-3 *4 * 3.14 * 1*1

P = 0.01256 Watts

------------------------

Intesity of 100000 fans = 1000000* I

I = 1 e -3 * 1000000

I = 1000 W/m^2
