Question
Two parallel, vertical, plane mirrors, 26.5 cm apart, face each other. A light source at point P is 22.4 cm from the mirror on the left and 4.1 cm from the mirror on the right.
(a) How many images of point P are formed by the mirrors?
The answer for part A is an infinite number of images
(b) Find the distance from the mirror on the right to the two nearest images behind the mirror.
(c) Find the number of reflections of light rays for each of these images.
Explanation / Answer
Image by plane mirror formed at same distance as the object distance.
and image is formed behind the mirror. (virtual image)
b) For right mirror:
distanc of P = 4.1 cm
so image will be formed at 4.1 cm behind it.
number of reflection = 1 (by right mirror)
second image:
The image of P by left mirror will be formed to the left of left mirror at 22.4 cm.
now this image will work as object for right side mirror.
so distance of this image (object for right mirror) from right mirror = 22.4 + 26.5
= 48.9 cm
SO image distane = 48.9 cm
no. of relfection = 2 (first by left mirror then by right mirror)
c) 1 and 2 (as discucssed above)
