Question
Some organisms living in volcanic environments at the bottom of the ocean have evolved to live routinely at temperature above the boiling point of water. Please explain how an organism might be able to adapt to life without its water boiling at such high temperature. Hint, recall how a pressure cooker works. Some organisms living in volcanic environments at the bottom of the ocean have evolved to live routinely at temperature above the boiling point of water. Please explain how an organism might be able to adapt to life without its water boiling at such high temperature. Hint, recall how a pressure cooker works.Explanation / Answer
Organisms surviving in extremely hot environments from are known as hyperthermophiles. In volcanic environments, due to extremely high pressure boiling point of water increases that is why organisms like bacteria are able to tolerate high temperatures, apart from this there are many adaptations within the organisms which help them to survive like they have protein molecules which exhibit hyperthermostability that is they can maintain their structural stability and function at high temperatures, their cell membranes have a large amount of saturated fatty acids which help them to maintain fluidity of cell membrane.
