Suppose that this mirror produces an image of the sun, and the image is located 0.8846 m from the mirror. The same mirror is then used to produce an image of the tree. The image of the tree is 0.9686 m from the mirror. (a) How far away is the tree? (b) The image height of the tree has a magnitude of 0.13 m. How tall is the tree? Sun is far-far away, so we can assume that object is at infinity

image is at 0.8846 m

using mirror equation

1/v + 1/u = 1/f

1/f = 1/infinite + 1/0.8846

1/f = 0 + 1/0.8846

f = 0.8846 m

now in the case of tree

v = 0.9686 m, and f = 0.8846 m

1/v + 1/u = 1/f

1/u = [1/0.8846 - 1/0.9686]

which gives

u = 10.2 m

So the tree is 10.2 m away from the mirror.

m = -v/u = hi/ho

given hi = 0.13

-0.9686/10.2 = 0.13/ho

ho = -10.2*0.13/0.9686 = -1.3689 m

negative sign means image is inverted.

tree is 1.3689 m tall
