You should make your submissions after you complete the exam. Astronauts use a centrifuge to simulate the acceleration of a rocket launch. The centrifuge takes 30 s to speed up from rest to its top speed of one rotation every 1.3 s. The astronaut is strapped into a seat 6.0 m from the axis of the centrifuge. What is the astronaut’s tangential acceleration during the first 30 s? How many gs of acceleration does the astronaut experience when the centrifuge is rotating at its top speed? Each 9.8 m/s2 of acceleration is 1 g. (Points : 20)

Explanation / Answer

  Given T = 1.30 sec
Thus by = 2/T
=> = (2 x 3.14)/1.30 = 4.83rad/sec
By (final) = (initial) + t
=>4.83 = 0 + x 30
=> = 0.161rad/sec^2
Thus by a = r
=>a = 6.0x 0.161
=>a = 0.966 m/s^2

2) By F = mv^2/r = mr^2 {as v = r}
=>ma = mr^2
=>a = r^2
=>a/g = r^2/g = [6.0 x (4.83)^2]/9.8 = 14.28g
