When an aluminum ring is placed on ring launcher so that it surrounds the coil, it flies upward
when a AC current is applied to the coil. This does not occur when the intact ring is replaced
by a split ring (see below).

Assume that the ring launcher is a magnetic field generator, so when current is applie to the ring, a force is generated in cuurnt carrying coil, causing it to fly away, but for a split ring, the current cannot be introduced in the ring, hence force on non current carrying conductor in a magnetic field = 0, hence split ring does not fly away
