Question

When an aluminum can finally disintegrate-after about 100 years- what is the most likely chemical product? Why is it more advantageous to recycle aluminum as opposed to coal or oil? Why are the crystals of alum washed with a solution containing half water and half ethanol? The first reaction you carried out in the synthesis of alum produced hydrogen gas. Based on the amounts of chemicals you used, determine the volume of hydrogen gas produced. Assume for simplicity that the gas was produced at STP.

Explanation / Answer

2. Coal and oil once used lose their identity and convert to new chemicals. Hence it is very difficult and expensive to recycle them. Hence recycling of coal and oil is not favorable. How ever aluminum doesn't lose its identity in most of its uses like as a container, machinary, crafts etc. Hence we can easily recycle them at a lower cost. Since the total alunimum present in earth's crust is limited, by recycling we can we can preserve aluminum on earth's crust.

3: We use half-water and half-ethanol to wash the crystal of alum because ethanol reduces the solubility of alum and helps in the complete solidification of alum.

4: The chemical reaction for the production of H2(g) is

2Al(s) + 2KOH(aq) + 6 H2O(l) ----- > KAl(OH)4 + 3 H2(g)

From the above equation we can calculate the amount of H2(g) produced.
