Question
With the salmon swimming in this fresh water mountain stream, which direction does sodium flow as fluid flows through the lumen and passes by the epithelial cells of the proximal tubule of the kidney of the salmon?
A.)From the lumen to the extracellular fluid
B.)From the extracellular fluid to the lumen
C.)There is no net flow of sodium
D.)First from the lumen to the extracellular fluid, then from the extracellular fluid to the lumen
E.)First from the extracellular fluid to the lumen, then from the lumen to the extracellular fluid
Explanation / Answer
Answer- ( a) very well mechanism operate in salmons body for ion concentration specially for sodium , potassium, and chloride.when salmon swim in freshwater there is low sodium outside ( in fresh water) so salmon tries to conserve sodium in the body. This mechanism is operated by ATP sensitive sodium channel in epithelial cells . So sodium movement occurs from lumen to extracellular fluid. This process is reversed when salmon swim in sea water that contain high salt concentration .
