Question
I need help with a 2 part question...
Part 1 - A Chevy Blazer has a mass of 1850 kg. If the car is traveling at 15 m/s and the driver slams on the brakes causing the car to skid, how far would the car travel before it stops on dry asphalt? (the instructions say to find the force of friction, then use F=ma to find acceleration, then find d - the answer is 17m)
Part 2 - How far would the car travel if it were skidding to a stop on ice? (the answer is 77m)
Can someone show me the steps to get the answers?
Explanation / Answer
here,
mass , m = 1850 kg
the initial speed , vi = 15 m/s
the coefficient of kinetic friction for dry asphalt , uk = 0.675
let the distance travelled be d
using work energy theorm
work done = change in kinetic energy
uk*m*g*d = 0.5 * m *vi^2
0.695 * 9.8 * d = 0.5 * 15^2
d = 16.52 m
d = 17 m
the distnace taken to stop is 17 m
part 2)
the coefficient of kinetic friction for ice , uk = 0.149
let the distance travelled be d
using work energy theorm
work done = change in kinetic energy
uk*m*g*d = 0.5 * m *vi^2
0.149 * 9.8 * d = 0.5 * 15^2
d = 77.04 m
d = 77 m
the distnace taken to stop is 77 m
