Question

The photo at the above shows a six-year old child bouncing on a trampoline. The trampoline basically acts like a spring, catching the child, storing its energy, and returning it. The photo shows the child at the top of her jump. If we assume when the trampoline catches her it stretches halfway to the ground, estimate the spring constant of the trampoline.
_____N/m

Explain how you got your answer, clearly state your assumptions and how you came to the numbers you estimated, since grading on this problem will be mostly based on your reasoning, not on your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Child at a height of 2 m and mass 30 Kg, acceleration due to gravity 10 m/s2 . child jumps and goes on other side by 1m.

Change in heigt 3 m . trampoline strecthes by 1m.

energy of the child = mgh=30 X 3 X 10=900 J goes into the energy of the spring = k/2 as x2=1

K /2=900

K=1800 N/m
