Question
I need help with a flying pig assignment. The above information was given in class, along with:
T (time for the pig to go around the circle) is 1.81s.
I need the formulas and how to work the following:
1. Record the measurement of the radius of the circle and show how that is used to calculate the velocity of the pig in the circle.
2. Record the measurement of the mass of the pig and write an equation for Newton's 2nd Law in tye Y direction.
3. Write an equation for Newton's 2nd Law in the X direction using the expression for centripetal force.
4. Using the equations in 2 and 3, solve for teh tension in the string when the pig is circling.
5. What is teh tension in the string when the pig is not moving?
Thank you!!
Explanation / Answer
1) period T = 2*pi*r/v
r = 0.42 m
then speed is v = 2*pi*r/T = (2*3.142*0.42)/1.81 = 1.45 m/s
2)mass m = 0.161 kg
T*cos(theta)-mg = 0
T*cos(27.8) -mg = 0
3) T*sin(theta) = m*v^2/R
T*sin(27.8) = m*v^2/R
4) Tension T = m*g/cos(27.8) = (0.161*9.81)/cos(27.8) = 1.78 N
5) T = m*g = 0.161*9.81 = 1.579 N
