Question

You ore shown two wheelbarrow designs, as in the figure. The wheels, axle and handles of each wheelbarrow weight 60.0 N. The load chamber and its contents of each wheelbarrow weigh 525N. These forces act at the locations shown for each wheelbarrow. The man applies a force F to the handles (as shown) to maintain the wheelbarrow in equilibrium. Answer the following question without doing any calculations. For which design is there a greater total torque from the 60.0 N and 525 N forces together? Briefly explain your answer. Using the principle of rotational equilibrium, find the magnitude of the force F applied by the man in each case. Clearly show your work in the space provided.

Explanation / Answer

Apply the condition for rotataional equilibrium write total torque in each case

First case,

       T = [ (525 N ) ( 0.4 m ) + ( 60 N ) ( 0.4 + 0.2 m ) ]

          = 246 N.m

Total length, r = 0.4 m + 0.2 m + 0.7 m = 1.3 m

Magnitude of force applied by man:

F = T /r = 246 N.m / 1.3 m = 189 N

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Case (2)

Net force applied by man:

     F = (1/1.3 m)   [( 60 N )( 0.4 + 0.2 m )]

         = 27.7 N
