Question

Two children are riding on a merry-go-round. The first child sits at the edge of the merry-go-round, and the second child sits halfway between the edge and the center. Which of the following is true?

a. the children have the same angular velocity, but the first child has a lower linear velocity.

b. the children have the same angular velocity, but the first child has a higher linear velocity.

c. the children have the same linear velocity, but the first child has a higher angular velocity.

d. the children have the same linear velocity, but the first child has a lower angular velocity.

e. the children have the same linear velocity and the same angular velocity.

Explanation / Answer

Angular velocity = angular displacement/ time

w= d/dt

Since both children travel equal d in unit dt, they both will have same w.

Linear velocity = w*r

v1 = w1*r1

v2 = w2*r2

Since r2= r1/2 and w1=w2

v2 = w1*(r1/2) = v1/2

Thus b) the children have the same angular velocity, but the first child has a higher linear velocity.
