Question

An air parcel at 300 hPa has a temperature of -60 degree C. Estimate its potential temperature using a skew-T. Compare your estimate to the correct (i.e., calculated) value. An air parcel at 500 hPa has a potential temperature of 333 K. Estimate its temperature from the skew-T and compare it to the correct value. A low level slab of air has a temperature of 20 degree C at 1000 hPa and 15 degree C at 850 hPa. The base of the slab is lifted adiabatically to 450 hPa and the lid to 200 hPa. Is the static stability of the slab increased or decreased? An air parcel has a temperature of 0 degree C at 1000 hPa. It is lifted adiabatically to 600 hPa where it is heated isobarically to -20 degree C and then it descends adiabatically to 1000 hPa. What is its temperature?

Explanation / Answer

a) First, write all quantities in SI unit

300 hPa = 30000 Pa; -60°C = (-60 + 273) = 213k

= T(p0/p)^k = 213x (100000/30000)2/7 = 298.30 K

b) 500 hpa = 5000 h , T = 333k

T(p0/p)^k = 333x (100000/50000)2/7

= 404.32 k
