Question
An agronomist examines the cellulose content of a variety of alfalfa hay. Suppose that the cellulose content in the population has standard deviation ?-8 milligrams per gram (mg/g). A sample of 14 cuttings has mean cellulose content x = 145 mg/g. (a) Give a 90% confidence interval for the mean cellulose content in the population. (Round your answers to two decimal places.) 141.48 148.52 140 mg/g, but the agronomist believes that (b) A previous study claimed that the mean cellulose content was u the mean is higher than that figure. State Ho and Ha- O Ho: ? > 140 mg/g; Ha: ? = 140 mg/g Ho: ? 140 mg/g O H0: ?-140 mg/g; Hai ? 140 mg/g Ho: ?-140 mg/g; Hai ?Explanation / Answer
Solution:
Part c) we assume that : population should be Normally distributed and sample is drawn from that Normally distributed population. Also we have to take sample by simple random sampling ( SRS ) method, so that there would not be any kind of bias in sample.
Thus options first and second doesn't matter here.
That is : there is no such assumption in which standard deviation should be less than 10.
Standard deviation is always > 0 and it takes any value > 10 . It depends on data.
Also we do not assume Uniform distribution.
Thus correct options are : Option third anf Option fourth.
3rd option: Bacause our sample is not too large , the population should be normally distributed , or at least not extremely nonnormal.
4th option: we must assume that the 14 cuttings in our sample are an SRS.
