(e-g. 1 2nd.) 3 456 7 Part 2: Cookies and DVs Using the 5/20 rule (2 points). 1) Does one cookie have a low amount of saturated fat? 2) Does one cookie have a high amount of fiber? 3) What is the least number cookies that would give you a high amount of sodium? 4) How many servings would it take to reach a high amount of fiber? Yes No Yes NoExplanation / Answer
PART1:
1. A single serving size is 2 cookies.
2. The number of calories per serving is 170.
3. The total fat content per servings is 8g.
4. The number of milligrams of saturated fats per serving is 2.5mg
5. The number of milligrams of cholesterol per serving is less than 5mg
6. The number of milligrams of sodium per serving is 125mg.
7. The number of grams of fiber per serving is less than 1g.
8. Percentage of calcium per serving is 0%.
9. How many nutrient DVs are low using 5/20 rule: all the %DVs are less than 20%
10. In the ingredients list the sugars appears at 4th position.
PART2:
5/20 rule says that if the %DV for a nutrient is less than 5% then there is a low amount of this nutrient, while if the %DV is greater than 20% then there is a high amount of this nutrient.
1. Does one cookie have low saturated fats (13%) ..... NO
2. Does one cookie have high amount of fiber (2%)......NO
3. What is the least number of cookies that give least amount of sodium: 2 cookies give 125mg sodium which is 5%DV so one cookie will have %DV less than 5%.
4. How many servings it would take to reach high amount of fiber: The %DV of dietary fiber is 2% per serving, to reach high fiber value the %DV must be above 20%, so it will require 11servings to get that amount of fiber.
1. Comparing values of the 2 given foods and selecting the healthy choice, the three nutrients that would be checked and compared will be fats, proteins and sodium.
I) Fats and more specifically saturated fats are very critical, they are not easily metabolised and they locate in the adipose tissues and blood vessels. Here we can see that potato chips have a moderately high amount of fats (10%DV) compared to pretzels(2%DV).
II) proteins are low in value in both the cases but still pretzels have 3% when compared to 2%in the case of potato chips.
III) Sodium is having exceptionally high values of 25%DV in pretzels when compared to potato chips.
I would be selecting pretzels over potato chips looking at the low %DV of fats and high %DV of proteins in pretzels when compared to potato chips.
