Question
Explain how the definition of the kilogram can be converted to the measurements of time, distance, voltage, and current using the Watt balance. It is interesting that it is now possible to purchase a Lego Watt Balance that is sold for educational purposes. (15 points)
5. Explain how the definition of the kilogram can be converted to the measurements of time, distance, voltage, and current using the Watt balance. It is interesting that it is now possible to purchase a Lego Watt Balance that is sold for educational purposes. (15 points)Explanation / Answer
Conventionally, the kilogram is defines as the the unit of mass which is equal to the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram.It is the last base quantity of SI unit which depends on a physical artifact.
The working principle of Watt Balance is based on Farday's law of induction. A coil of wire of length L is moved at a speed v through a magnetic flux density B so that a voltage V is induced. This induced voltage can be written as
V = BLv, B = V/Lv ...(1)
The gravitational force is counterbalanced by the electromagnetic force generated by the current carrying coil in the magnetic field as
F = mg = BLI
m = BLI/g
Substituting (1)
m = VI/gv
Velocity can be written as L/t
So, m = VIt/gL.
