Question
Two circular rods, one steel and the other copper, are both 0.750 m long and 1.50 cm in diameter. Each is subjected to a force with magnitude 3500 N that compresses the rod. What is the difference in the length of the two rods when compressed? (what is the delta L in meters)
I was unsure of where the force to compress them were being applied and is the 2 rods were seperate or one system. I tried finding the individual (delta L) with (delta L)=FL/YA [young's modulus] of the copper and steel rod individually and adding them up, however that was wrong. [I got .202 m with that attempt]
Explanation / Answer
Modulus of elasticity of Steel = 200Gpa
Modulus of elasticity of Copper = 117 Gpa
change in length of Steel rod = FL/YA
l = 3500* 0.75 / (200*10^9) *(pi*0.0075^2)
l = 0.0000742723 m
change in length of Copper rod = FL/YA = 3500* 0.75 / (117*10^9) *(pi*0.0075^2)
l = 0.0001269612 m
SO THE difference in length of the rod is (0.0000742723 + 0.0001269612 ) = 0.0002012335 m
