Question
1- Did you find that the two ears of corn followed the Principle of Segregation? Did the purple and yellow kernels occur in Mendelian ratios, or not? Explain your answer and any reason you feel the ratios may/may not have deviated from the predicted results. (Hint- incorporate your data into your answer!)
2- Assume for a cross involving two separate traits that the alleles are located on separate chromosomes. If sexual reproduction occurred between two heterozygous parents, what is the genotypic ration of all possible gametes? You may want to use a Punnett Square to assist you in answering.
Explanation / Answer
1. The ear of the corn bears fruit (the seeds) which are either purple or yellow in color. The allele A (purple) is dominant over the recessive allele a (yellow).
AA X aa-parents
purple x yellow
100% PURPLE- heterozygous genotype Aa
Aa x Aa(selfing to obtain f2.)
3 purple with genotypes AA and Aa and 1 yellow with genotype aa.
Thus these data are in complete accordance with Mendelian genetics suggesting that f1 is all dominant with purple colour and reappearance of recessive character in the f2 generation in the form of yellow color .(3:1 ratio)
2.
Aa x Aa (two heterozygous parents)
genotypic ratio- 1AA: 2Aa: 1aa
phenotypic ratio-3dominant :1 recessive
