Part (B) Solve all four problems (15 MARKS) m1L Problem 1) (4 Marks) Two masses, m 10.0 kg and m2 5 kg, set on frictionless surface. The two masses are attached by string to mass m 7.00 kg. Then, ma is attached to m 3 kg, as in the figure. Consider the string as a perfect massless string. Calculate: ma = 10.0kg and m2 = 5kg, set m3 1) The acceleration of the system of the four masses. 2) Find the tension between m2, and ma. 3) Find the tension between m, and m2. 4) If m1 = m m4 2 = m,-m4, then find the value of acceleration of the system of the four masses.

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

1) let the acceleration of the system is a

Using second law of motion

a = effective force/total mass

a = (m3 * g + m4 * g)/(m1 + m2 + m3 + m4)

a = (7 + 3) * 9.8/(10 + 5 + 7 + 3)

a = 3.92 m/s^2

the acceleration of the system is 3.92 m/s^2

2)

NOw , for the tension between m2 and m3 is T23

and tension between m1 and m2 is T12

for mass m1

T12 = m1 * a

T12 = 10 * 3.92

T12 = 39.2 N

now , for mass m2

T23 - T12 = m2 *a

T23 - 39.2 = 5 * 3.92

T23 = 58.8 N

the tension between m2 and m3 is 58.8 N

3)

the tension between m1 and m2 is 39.2 N

4)

for the same mass for each block ,

a = effective force/total mass

a = (m3 * g + m4 * g)/(m1 + m2 + m3 + m4)

a = 2 * m * 9.8/(4m)

a = 4.9 m/s^2

the acceleration of the blocks is 4.9 m/s^2
