Question
Consider a bar, of length 3.5 m, shown in the figure, being acted on by three forces. The magnitudes of the first two forces are 12 N and 37 N, and the first force is acting on the end of the bar at an angle 45 degrees as shown.
A) What is the torque, in newton-meter, due to F1 on this bar relative to the left end? Use a coordinate system with positive directed out of the screen.
B) What is the torque, in newton-meters. due to F2 on this bar relative to the left end, if this force is acting at the midpoint of the bar? Use a coordinate system with positive directed out of the screen.
C) What is the magnitude of the force F3, in newtons, if the force is a distance .75m from the left end and the bar is not rotating?
*I keep getting 29.7 Nm for the first part, but it's not the correct answer.
Explanation / Answer
torque due to F1 = T1 = L*F1*sin45 = +30 Nm
torque due to F2 = T2 = +L/2*F2*sin90 = +(3.5/3)*37 = +43 Nm
torque to F3 = torque due to F1 & F2
F3*d = 30 + 43
F3*0.75 = 73
F3 = 97 N
