Question

An object with a height of 2.94 cm is placed 39.0 mm to the left of a lens with a focal length of 35.0 mm. Where is the image located? What is the height of the image? A physics instructor wants to produce a double-slit interference pattern large enough for her class to see. For the size of the room, she decides that the distance between successive bright fringes on the screen should be at least 1.98 cm. If the slits have a separation d = 0.0450 mm, what is the minimum distance from the slits to the screen when 632.8 nm light from a He-Ne laser is used?

Explanation / Answer

11.

u = 39 mm

f = 35 mm

By lens law,

v = fu/(u-f) = 35*39/ (39 - 35) = 341.25 mm

a) The location of image = 341.25 mm = 0.34125 m to the right

b) hi / ho = - v/u

=> hi = - 2.94*341.25/39 = - 25.725 cm

Height of image = - 25.725 cm =  25.725 cm inverted
