2. Write a paragraph of 3-5 sentences answering the following questions. Your response should first answer the question and then go onto state physiological interpretation's behind your answer. Paragraphs that demonstrate complete and thorough reasoning will receive full points. You discover a drug that prevents voltage-gated Na+ channel inactivation gates from opening when they are closed but has no effect on inactivation gates when they are open. What would happen to the action potential in a neuron exposed to this drug? Explain your answer. Assume the neuron is at resting membrane potential (e.g., -70 mV) at the time it is exposed to the drug.Explanation / Answer
This drug causes the inactivation of sodium channel from opening due to which when a cell receive the threshold potential which is about -55mV to -60mV the sodium channels dont open due to which the membrane potential remain as the threshold potentioal The influx of sodium ion make the membrane electro positive inside and the potential across the membrane become +30mV to +40mV which is called as action potential. But when this drug act on the sodium channel, the sodium ions will not be able to diffuse through membrane and the membrane potential will not increase to generate action potential.so there will be no action potential across.
