Question

The capacitors in the sketch are all identical with capacitance C = 3000 mu F. Initially they are uncharged, potential difference supplied by the battery is V = 1.5 Volts. After the switch is dosed, how many Coulombs of trough the battery until all capacitors are fully charged? A 20 mu F capacitor connected to a 10 volt battery is first fully charged up. When it is fully charged, the 20 mu F capacitor is disconnected from the battery and connected in parallel to a 10 mu F capacitor which is initially uncharged. The initial charge on the 20 mu F capacitor redistributes to both capacitors. What is the final voltage across both capacitor?

Explanation / Answer

capacitors in upper portion are in series so

net capacitance = C + C + C + C

C1 = 4C

C1 = 4 * 3000 * 10^-6

C1 = 0.012 F

similarily for lower capacitors

C2 = 4 * C

C2 = 0.012 F

C1 and C2 are in series so

1 / C = 1 / C1 + 1 / C2

1 / C = 1 / 0.012 + 1 / 0.012

net capacitance C = 0.006 F

charge = capacitance * voltage

charge = 0.006 * 1.6

charge = 0.0096 C
