Question
The cantilevered platform (meaning, the platform is supported on only one side) is attached to a slanted supporting column at point A.T he structure is designed to support 8000 lb-ft of torque at point A and 15,000 lb-ft of torque at point B. What is the maximum amount of weight allowed (with a center of mass at point C) if the torque limit at point A is not to be exceeded? What is the mass of the weight in slugs? If this weight is applied as shown, what is the maximum offset distance allowed between points A and B so as to not exceed the torque limit at B?Explanation / Answer
(a) As, Torque = Force x Distance
Hence, For maximum weight from point A,
8000x12 lb-in = W x 8 lb-in
W = 12000 lb
(b) As, 1 lb = 0.031081 slugs
Hence W = 12000 x 0.031081 slugs
W = 372.972 slugs
(c) Let the offset distance be d
then, Torque = Force x Distance
15000 x 12 = 12000 x (8+d)
15 = 8 + d
d = 7 inches
