Question
As you can see from the "Activity" part of this week's assignment, the Internet, as well as your textbook, provides an enormous amount of interesting and useful information on genetic engineering and biotechnology products. Activity Assignment 2 requires you to research genetically engineered animals on the Internet as biotechnology products using the suggestions in the activity assignment file (pdf) or other sources you locate on your own, and post your findings/opinion to the Discussion Forum by 8 pm Wednesday of the assignment week (earn 10 activity points). The Discussion Assignment is to provide a thoughtful response by 8 pm Sunday of the assignment week, to the information posted by two other students on this topic (earn 10 discussion points). You should include in your responses to both assignments, sufficient information on your Internet sources for other students to find what you read. When referencing a web site in a document or a posting to a discussion forum, be sure to include the web address, the author of the page (if known), and the date when you accessed the site or when the site was last updated. Remember, your response to another student should address one or more technical aspects of their original posting, and not simply agree or disagree with their statements.
Explanation / Answer
Ans = GENETIC ENGINEERING is the direct manipulation of an organism genes. Genetic engineering is different from traditional breeding, where the organism’s genes are manipulated indirectly.
In the 1980 and 1990s, scientists were aiming to make some pigs resistant to influenza, whilst other pigs were being manipulated with growth hormone genes. Possible scenarios included sheep that would produce wool without having to be sheared, cows that would produce human breast milk and pigs with improved digestive systems. A significant boost to this trend was provided by the cloned sheep "DOLLY". Before Dolly, each genetically engineered animal was a single event, but now it became possible to produce largely identical copies of the animals.
In 2015, transgenic SALMON developed by Intrexon. Intertexon transgenic salmon produce additional growth hormones and can therefore supposedly grow eight times faster than normal salmon.
What animals are being genetically engineered?
animals that have been safely genetically engineered include cattle, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep, dogs, cats, fish, rats, and mice.
Why are animals being genetically engineered?
By finding genes that control beneficial traits, we are able to precisely introduce those genes into another animal’s genome, so the GE animal will possess that trait.
One example is the ENVIRO - PIG Through genetic engineering, this animal emits 30 to 60 percent less phosphorus than traditional pigs fed the same conventional diet. This lessens livestock’s impact in environment.
Thank you.
