Question
When visiting the planet of Tralfamadore as a geneticst, you determine that webbed hands are dominant over non-webbed hands. You also determine that green pigment in the epidermis of the skin is dominant over no pigment, though you have seen Tralfamadorians with pale green skin. With their consent, you mate Tralfamadorians who are homozygous for green skin and webbed hands with those Tralfamadorians that are homozygous for white skin and non-webbed hands. Individuals within the F1 progeny are then crossed with one another. Here are the observed phenotypes and number of offspring: 35 webbed, green; 72 webbed, pale green; 31 webbed, white; 11 not webbed, green; 18 not webbed, pale green; 8 not webbed, white.
A. Make a hypothesis about the inheritance of these two traits in Tralfamadorians. Please explain in several sentences. (3 points)
Explanation / Answer
Although the genes responsible for webbed feet and pigmented skin are independent genes and NOT linked genes, they follow the mendelian law of independent assortment. But the trait "Pigmented skin" is behaving as a non-mendelian trait showing the occurance of blending of the two extreme traits (pale green), the phenomenon commonly reffered to as " Incomplete dominance".
