Question
List the four experiments in order of decreasing amount of thermal energy produced
1. I give a box a short push until it is moving with speed v. I release the box and it slides along level rough ground, coming to a rest after a distance x. During the slide, some thermal energy is produced. I then do the same experiment three more times
2. Everything the same, except releasing the box with a speed of 2v.
3. Everything the same, except I load the box up so it has twice the mass. I have to push harder, but I still release it with speed v.
4. Releasing the box with a speed v again, but releasing it up a 30 degree slope instead of level ground. The rough surface is the same. List the four experiments in order of decreasing amount of thermal energy produced.
Explanation / Answer
Concept- This question is based on the law of conservation of energy means energy neither can be created nor be destroyed but can converted from one form to other.
1. In this case box have kinetic energy which is converted later into thermal energy because of rough ground.
Thermal Enegry Q1= K.E = 1/2mv2 .
2. In second case Thermal Enegry Q2 = K.E = 1/2m(2v)2 = 4Q1
3. In third case Thermal Enegry Q3= K.E = 1/2(2m)v2 .= 2Q1
4. in forth case Thermal Enegry Q4 = K.E = 1/2m(vcos30)2 .in this case it have less energy than other.
Q2>Q3>Q1>Q4
