One of paleontology's favorite puzzles is the mass extinction of the dinosaurs (and many other kinds of species which lived at the same time). Currently, the most popular explanation for this is the "impact" hypothesis. Review the Stephen Jay Gould article to brush up on the nature of this proposal. This is actually a suggestion of an ecological disaster. Explain what this hypothesis is suggesting in terms of the structure of an ecosystem, with particular reference to trophic pyramids. Though many, many groups of organisms suffered greatly during this mass extinction, most apparently left some surviving species to radiate into the vacated niches. Why do you suppose the dinosaurs suffered such a complete disaster. (Well, except for the birds, of course). In other words, why were the dinosaurs apparently particularly vulnerable to this kind of disaster?
