Question
Our textbook is around 28.5 cm long. Many such books can be stacked on each other in such a way to extend in one direction. The procedure is to make sure that the center of mass of the combined system of books that is on top of any given book is at or to the left of the right edge of the lower book, as shown in the sketch below. How many books would be needed to span a distance D=1.0 m? At $200 per book, what would it cost to span 1.5 m? How high would each stack be? (Take the thickness of each book to be 5.0 cm.)Explanation / Answer
Books needed to span distance 1 m = 1 * 0.285/0.05
= 6 books
=> cost to span 1.5 m = (1.5 * 0.285/0.05) * 200
= $ 1710
=> Height of stack = 6 * 5 = 30 cm
